Zanzibar – Starfishes and Dolphins

April 19, 2013

Zanzibar is the perfect place for scuba diving, fishing, swimming and spending hours in the sun. One can experience a tropical island surrounded by the turquoise ocean under cerulean blue skies and enjoy long walks on the white beaches. Zanzibar’s waters are home to the most beautiful starfishes and playful dolphins.

Zanzibar consists of several small islands and two main islands, Unguja and Pemba, and is wrapped in a mysterious African-Arab ambience. Zanzibar City is the capital of Zanzibar and is well-known for its historic center, Stone Town. Stone Town is a World Heritage Site and also the place where Farrokh Bulsara (Freddie Mercury from the rock band Queen) was born.

Jump on the Daladala (the only public transportation) and visit the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. The Zanzibar red colobus (monkey) is an endangered species and will entertain you for hours. The Mnemba Marine Park is about ten kilometers (6 miles) from Stone Town where you can see the corals and green turtles. You can experience a large number of butterflies at the Zanzibar Butterfly Center in Pete Village.

One of the most exciting events in Zanzibar is the three-day Sauti Busara Festival where one can experience the “Sounds of Wisdom,” a Swahili Music and Cultural festival. You will receive a warm “Karibu” (Swahili for welcome), and you can dance to the Taarab music (popular east African rhythm, which means “to be moved”) from dusk to dawn.

Zanzibar offers a wide range of restaurants, some fancy and sophisticated, and some very localized and down to earth. Make sure to try some of the local dishes, such as Pwewa-wa- nazi (octopus boiled in coconut milk, curry, cinnamon, cardamom, garlic and lime) or Boku-boku (meat cooked in maize, ginger, cumin, chili, tomato and onion). The spice cake is absolutely delicious and a typical dessert in Zanzibar. The cake is made of pastry with a mix of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and chocolate.

You can travel light when you are on your way to this amazing island, as the weather in Zanzibar is perfect most of the time.  The Kaskazi, or northern monsoon, lasts from December to March.

Zanzibar is a beautiful country with breathtaking views. The local people are friendly and honest. The island is a stunning paradise, surrounded by the clear waters of the ocean, cerulean blue skies, and white beaches. Zanzibar is home to the most beautiful starfishes and playful dolphins. Karibu, Karibu!

  1. the shore has really a very fine sand and it’s inviting me to dive in. I love the shot and it would be nice to have a bigger resolution of it. It could be a good pc wallpaper though. =)
