Samsung Galaxy Tab s 8.4
Samsung has just announced a soon to-be-released tablet, their first one that wears the “S” fingerprint, which is the mark that stands on their high-end devices and means serious business when it comes to powerful hardware and other impressive features. I’m talking about the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4, a top notch device that threatens most of its competitors from the tablet market, as it sports a great list of specs and also has a very handsome appearance that will certainly turn some heads around. Check it out in the following review and find out what’s exactly cooking under its hood.
In its retail box, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 comes along with a charger head and a microUSB cable for re-charging the device and making data transfers.
As I was previously saying, the tablet is a very handsome fella, measuring 212.8x 125.6 x 6.6 mm and has a weight of 294 grams. With these being said, it’s obvious that the profile of the tablet is really thin and elegant, while its weight is more than reasonable and won’t tire your hands when being held. Its design resembles with Samsung’s other tablets, but the story is totally different when taking a look at its back. The rear reveals a perforated faux-leather pattern, just like the company’s smartphone flagship, the Galaxy S5. Besides looking great, the back finish also offers a good hand grip.
The Galaxy Tab S 8.4 comes packed with a beautiful 8.4 inches (hence its name) Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, having a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels and a pixel density of 359 ppi. The image quality is absolutely wonderful and I would dare say that it puts to shame every other existing tablet display. The colors are punchy and vibrant, the contrast is excellent and the viewing angles are also extremely wide. Using the tablet outside comes without any issues, as it also sports an excellent sunlight legibility.

You’ll be greeted by a lot of features and improvements which will make your experience as good as it gets. The fingerprint scanner is here too, yet hasn’t received improvements over its functionality, and only serves to unlock the tablet, log in your Samsung account or make a payment via PayPal.
At the hardware department, the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 features an Exynos 5 Octa 5420 chipset, having a quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A7 and a quad-core 1.9 GHz Cortex-A15 processor, Mali-T628 MP6 GPU, 3 GB of RAM and comes in two versions, one with 16 GB of internal storage and the other with 32 GB. The memory can be expanded with a microSD card of up to 128 GB. The tablet is a powerful performer and will offer you a flawless experience, being very snappy and free of any issues.
In terms of connectivity, the tablet is available in two versions, a LTE one and Wi-Fi only. The first one offers support for quad-band GSM, 3G, and the second one is a LTE4 and offers support for six bands. Both of them support dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct and Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 with LE and A2DP, microUSB 2.0 with On-the-go support and there’s also an infra-red port for controlling your home devices via the WatchON application.
Surfing the web is a delight on the Galaxy Tab S 8.4. It comes packed with Google Chrome and also the Android standard browser, which has been customized here and there by Samsung. Both of them are offering a multitude of options and settings for enabling you to have a pleasant experience. The pages are loaded fast and look nice on the tablet’s gorgeous display.
For taking pictures, the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 comes packed with an 8 megapixels camera with autofocus that captures stills with a maximum resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels and features a LED flash for assisting in low light situations. The photos taken with the tablet offer a great image quality, with accurate colors, good contrast and a high amount of resolved detail.
The 1080p videos produced with the main camera are also showing a good image quality. There’s also a secondary 2.1 front facing camera on board.
Some other goodies from the tablet’s package are a some very capable media players, a GPS receiver with GLONASS support, the Hancom Office suite for managing document files, 50 GB of free Dropbox cloud storage and much more.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 holds inside a 4,900 mAh battery that will keep the device alive for almost 10 hours of web surfing or aprox. 13 hours of video playback.
