Gionee Elife S5.5 Review, China’s Finest

July 4, 2014

Gionee Elife S5.5The world of smartphones has been receiving some really impressive performers coming straight from China, and it seems like the Chinese are on a good path with their products, as we can see some top-notch features inside some very handsome phones that are certainly drawing a high amount of attention. Which is well deserved. Today, I’m going to be talking a bit about the slimmest phone in the world, the Gionee Elife S5.5. This baby definitely has some supermodel measurements and the inside features are proportional with its wonderful and elegant appearance. This fella has both beauty and brains – a combination which is alluring to say the least. Keep reading and find out more about this baby – it really had me impressed, so there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll like it too.
The smartphone’s retail box is quite rich in features. The Gionee Elife S5.5 is accompanied by a case which can also be used as a stand, a charger, microUSB cable that serves for re-charging your handset and making data connections, four screen protectors that have microfiber cloths, a pair of headphones with in-ear buds, a microUSB to USB adapter and a little tool for ejecting the microSIM. Wow, now that’s really something.
Now, let’s get to my favorite part: its appearance. The Elife S5.5 measures 145.1 x 70.2 x 5.5 mm and has a weight of 129 grams. Its design is simply charming. It features Gorilla Glass 3 on both its sides, which are surrounded by a magnesium frame. It really reminds me of the iPhone 4, although it lacks the rounded corners, which is good, as it offers a better grip. Managing it is very comfortable and the device sits comfortable in the hand, yet it may seem a little bit slippery due to its glass panels, so being a little bit more careful would be handy.
Gionee Elife S5.5 blackThe Elife S5.5 shows off a great 5 inches Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen that has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 441 ppi. As I’ve mentioned earlier, the handset features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The image quality is excellent (as expected), with vibrant colors, great contrast and extremely wide viewing angles. The sunlight legibility is also very good.
The Gionee Elife S5.5 comes loaded with the Amigo OS 2.0, which is a significantly customized Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean which is upgradeable to the latest version, 4.4.2 KitKat. The platform has been modified by Gionee and features all of the Google applications and services within a simplified platform that offers a very pleasant user experience due to its smooth and friendly interface.
At the hardware department, the Gionee Elife S5.5 features a Mediatek MT6592 chipset, having an octa-core 1.7 GHz Cortex-A7 processor, Mali-450MP4 GPU, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory which can’t be expanded due to the lack of a microSD card slot. The device is a good performer, although stands behind some of its competitors. Nevertheless, you’ll be enjoying a nice user experience, without encountering any lagging, freezing or any issues like that.
In terms of connectivity, the Gionee Elife S5.5 comes loaded with support for quad-band GSM, GPRS, EDGE, tri-band 3G, dual-band Wi-Fi b/g/n with Wi-Fi Direct and Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 with EDR and A2DP and microUSB 2.0 with USB-On-the-go support.
For surfing the web, you’ll be greeted by the UC browser. It holds support for a lot of things, yet offers an unimpressive performance and you should probably resort to using Google Chrome, which is significantly faster.
For capturing stills, the Elife S5.5 comes packed with a 13 MP camera with autofocus that takes photos with a maximum resolution of 4160 x 3120 pixels and features a single LED flash for helping in low light conditions. The camera application is rich in settings and options and you’ll be having touch focus, geo-tagging, HDR, panorama, face and smile detection, the Charm Camera app for improving your ugly mug and much more in the menu. The pictures taken with the device offer a nice image quality, with vibrant and accurate colors, a good amount of resolved detail and fine contrast.
The 1080p videos produced by the smartphone are also pretty impressive and will deliver a pleasing image quality.
Also on board is a secondary 5 megapixels front facing camera.
The Gionee Elife S5.5 features a lot of useful features in its backpack, such as a GPS receiver with A-GPS support and Google Maps for navigation, an FM Radio with RDS support, some great media players, the Kingsoft Office suite for viewing and editing document files, a file manager, the Android Device Manager for ringing, erasing or locating your phone if it gets lost or stolen, Google Now as your personal assistant and much more.
The Gionee Elife S5.5 holds a 2,300 mAh battery inside and will stay alive for at least one day and a half under a moderate usage.
