Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini

If you know a thing or two about smartphones, you probably know that Samsung occupies a greatly desired place at the top of the mountain, having some of the best devices out there to run in the smartphone “champions league”. The Galaxy S5 is one of them, also being the latest and greatest addition to the famous Galaxy series, which have made a great reputation for themselves based on their great offerings and top notch features.
Well, it’s time for this champion to receive a Mini-Me partner, for satisfying the needs of customers who don’t necessarily need the kind of features and specs found on the big S5 brother, and settle for something close to it. The Galaxy S5 Mini comes to the rescue and brings some attractive specs along with a design which is identical to its siblings’, having all the goodies packed inside a smaller body, which is naturally more manageable and pleasant to use on a daily basis. Let’s not forget about the water resistance and smaller price, which are some powerful factors that mean a lot to a specific area of consumers. Keep reading and find out more about how the Galaxy S5 Mini tries to follow the steps of its bigger sibling.

The Galaxy S5 Mini comes in a small box which keeps, besides the phone itself, an A/C adapter, a microUSB cable for making data transfers and re-charging the phone and a pair of headphones with in-ear buds.

Let’s take a good look at the S5 Mini. The handset stands at 131.1 x 64.8 x 9.1 mm and has a weight of 120 grams, being quite lightweight and compact, so you’ll be managing it with ease as it stands comfortable in your hands and also slips easily into pockets. As I was previously saying, the S5 Mini inherited the design from its bigger sibling, looking almost exactly the same, but on a different scale. The best part regarding this pretty little handset’s body is its IP67 certification for being dust and water resistant (for up to 1 meter and 30 minutes). The handset also holds a solid build and seems very well put together, making its brother proud to have such a nice kinsman.
The PayPal certified fingerprint sensor is also here.

The star of the show from its frontal side is a 4.5 inches Super AMOLED display, which offers a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a pixel density of 326 ppi. As expected, the screen offers some punchy colors, a wonderful contrast and some very wide viewing angles, all of these being the ingredients of an excellent image quality. The sunlight legibility is also great.

Let’s see what’s cooking on the inside. The Galaxy S5 Mini will greet you with Android’s 4.4.2 KitKat version which has been tweaked with the latest TouchWiz interface. If you’re familiar with Android and TouchWiz, you’ll feel like home when using the Mini, if not, I’m pretty sure that you’ll get used to it quick, as it’s very friendly and intuitive. The handset enables you to fingerprint-secure it, keeps you updated with My Magazine, an app that displays news and social updates, offers Google Now and S Voice as personal assistants and much more.
Browsing through the interface goes nice and smooth due to its hardware, which isn’t the most impressive out there, but does a great job. The Galaxy S5 Mini uses an Exynos 3 Quad 3470 chipset, having a 1.4 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, Mali-400 MP4 GPU and 16 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded with a microSD card of up to 64 GB.

At the photography department, the Galaxy S5 Mini uses an 8 megapixels snapper with autofocus which captures stills with a maximum resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels and features a LED flash for improving the image quality in low light. The photos produced are great and offer a high amount of resolved detail, the colors look nice and accurate and the contrast is also good.
The video camera also delivers good results, producing some beautiful 1080p videos @ 30 fps.
Also on board is a 2.1 MP front facing camera for making video calls.

At the connectivity area, the Galaxy S5 Mini holds support for quad-band GSM, GPRS, EDGE and 3G, LTE,  dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 with LE, A2DP and EDR, NFC and microUSB 2.0. There’s also a dual-SIM version of the S5 Mini, but lacks support for NFC and LTE. There’s an infra-red port too on board.

Surfing the web can be done either by using Google Chrome or the standard Android browser, both of them coming pre-installed on the S5 Mini. The user experience is excellent in both cases, as the pages are loaded fast and the minimalist user interfaces are highly capable, hiding a plethora of settings and options under their simple-looking hoods.

Some other features and apps offered by the S5 Mini are some excellent media players, a GPS receiver with A-GPS and GLONASS, Google Maps for navigation, S Health for monitoring your wellness, a heart rate monitor and more.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini holds a 2,100 mAh removable battery that will offer almost three days between re-charges if the phone is used moderately.
