Meizu MX PRO, Like a true Pro!

January 26, 2015

A few days ago, I was writing a review about the Meizu MX4, a tempting handset that holds on board a lot of features and is certainly an impressive device. But the Chinese considered that it deserves some improvements, so, in December, they’ve released the Meizu MX4 Pro, a slightly bigger successor that brings a larger and better display, a more powerful chipset (an octa-core Exynos 5 Octa, to be more precise), 3 GB of RAM instead of 2, a larger battery (3,350 mAh vs 3,100), NFC, an improved front-facing 5MP camera, a fingerprint sensor and more. Feeling interested? There’s more to it, so keep reading and check it out.

The Meizu MX4 Pro comes with a microUSB cable and a charger in its box; the headphones are included only in some marketplaces.

The phablet measures 150.1 x 77 x 9 mm and weighs 158 grams, slightly bigger and heavier than its predecessor, but not significantly. If you’re comfortable with the first, you’ll feel the same with the Pro. The design of the handset looks premium head-to-toe, even if the device is made from plastic. The build quality is very solid and reliable and a metallic frame surrounds the body, making it look very elegant and stylish. The back cover is removable and features a matte finish, which will keep fingerprints away from sticking to it.

As I was previously stating, the Meizu MX4 Pro comes with a slightly taller, but definitely better display, which measures 5.5 inches, has a resolution of 2560 x 1536 pixels, an impressive pixel density of 546 ppi and features Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. With these being said, it’s understandable that we’re talking about a gorgeous screen, which offers some amazing colors, excellent brightness, very wide viewing angles and a great contrast. It’ll surely please your eyes, no matter if you’re inside or outside, as the sunlight legibility is also very good.

When browsing through the MX4 Pro, you’ll be greeted by Meizu’s proprietary interface, Flyme v4.1, which relies on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. The Homescreen holds your apps and widgets and features a number of two panes which can be extended. There is no App drawer, so all of your apps are displayed on your homescreen and can be removed from there. For customizing your interface, you can choose between a whole bunch of themes or wallpapers. The notification area holds all your relevant notifications and also shows a panel of 5 toggles, which can be expanded. The interface will feel right at home after you get accustomed to it – and it shouldn’t take long, as it’s pretty friendly and intuitive.
The MX4 Pro also features a fingerprint scanner for enhancing security and it works like a charm. It consists in a sapphire glass pad (just like Apple) and can remember 5 fingerprints.
At the hardware department, the Meizu MX4 Pro also sees improvements and now holds on to an Exynos 5 Octa 5430 chipset, having a 2 GHz quad-core Cortex-A15  and a quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A7 CPUs, Mali-T628 GPU, 3 GB of RAM and comes in three versions, with 16, 32 or 64 GB of internal storage. You can’t expand its memory with a microSD card. In terms of performance, the handset does an excellent job and will provide you with a very flawless user experience, free of any inconveniences.

Let’s see what’s in the connectivity package. Here, we’re going to find support for quad-band GSM, GPRS, EDGE and 3G, tri-band or quad-band LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac with Wi-Fi Direct, Hotspot and DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0 with LE and A2DP, NFC and microUSB 2.0 with On-the-go support.

One of the most important assets featured by a smartphone is its camera. The Meizu MX4 Pro owns a 20.7 MP snapper which takes stills with a maximum resolution of 5248 x 3936 pixels and is accompanied by a dual-LED flash for helping in low light conditions. The camera application reveals support for HDR, Panorama, manual settings for adjusting the ISO, exposure compensation, shutter speed, focus and more. The photos produced are simply beautiful, with accurate colors, a lot of resolved details and an excellent contrast.
The video camera is also excellent and will deliver some awesome 4K videos @30 fps.
Of course, there’s also a front facing 5 MP snapper on board for enabling you to take “selfies” or simply make video calls.

Some other goodies offered by the Meizu MX4 Pro are two great media players for audio and video playback, and I must mention here that this handset offers an outstanding audio quality – with or without headphones plugged in. Maybe the best out there. Anyways, you also have a GPS receiver with A-GPS and GLONASS support, Google Maps for getting around, a file manager for allowing you to look into your stuff and more.

The Meizu MX4 Pro features a 3,350 mAh non-replaceable battery and will stay “alive” for one day and a half under an intensive usage or 3 days under a moderate one.
